Pennsylvania Blues Festival

When the long-running Poconos Blues Festival was cancelled for 2011 due to economic reasons.  After an amazing almost two decade-long run, blues fans in Pennsylvania and around the region were sorely left out in the cold. A loss was felt after 19 annual events, the Poconos Festival had grown to become one of the most popular festivals on the east coast, drawing a reported 12,000 music lovers each year from 30 states and 10 foreign countries.

After the disappointment, though, comes a ray of sunshine in the form of original Poconos Blues Festival promoter Michael Cloeren.  He has resurrected the left-for-dead event as the Pennsylvania Blues Festival. Scheduled for Saturday, July 30th and Sunday, July 31st, 2011 at the Blue Mountain Ski Area’s Valley Lodge.  It is the first annual Pennsylvania Blues Festival. The fest will feature 15 artists performing on two stages over the weekend event.

Teo Leyasmeyer remembered

A Blues All-Star Tribute to help the family of Teo Leyasmeyer. Teo, a blues pianist who booked blues artists at the original House of Blues in Cambridge, died in 2006 at the age of 59, leaving a wife and two daughters. All proceeds to benefit the Teo Leyasmeyer Family Fund.

Connecticut fans may remember seeing him play with Jeff Pitchell at the Berlin Blues Festival.

Teo was known as a friend to the musicians.  They got they treatment they deserved when he was booking acts.  He was perhaps the reason the HOB in Cambridge had more blues than the other clubs.

Buddy and Hopkins and Jason Nocera Helpin’ the Blues

The Blues Foundation in Memphis has announced that Jason Nocera’s comic characters, Buddy and Hopkins, will be used in a series of advertisements to promote the 2012 International Blues Challenge.  The advertisements began appearing in blues and music publications in May.  The first was in the 2011 Blues Music Award program.  In addition to the advertisements, the Buddy and Hopkins characters will also be used in promotional posters and t-shirts.

Nocera said, “I started Buddy and Hopkins back in 2003 and have met a ton of great people through the Blues Societies’ websites and publications around the world.  It’s great to give back a bit to the blues community after the generous support and enthusiasm they have shown me towards my characters and comic strips.,”

“The Blues Foundation is thrilled to be partnering with Jason Nocera and his world-famous ‘Buddy and Hopkins’ characters to promote the 2012 International Blues Challenge,” said Jay Sieleman, Executive Director of The Blues Foundation.  “Buddy and Hopkins seemed like such a natural to team up with the thousands of blues acts worldwide that take part in their local and regional competitions.  Indeed, as the year unfolds, the blues community will see that Buddy and Hopkins and Jason were the right guys for the job!”

The 2012 International Blues Challenge is in its 28th year.  Blues musicians from around the world come to Memphis competing for cash, prizes, and industry recognition.  The Blues Foundation will present the 28th International Blues Challenge January 31-February 4, 2012 in Memphis.

It is the world’s largest gathering of Blues acts and represents an international search by The Blues Foundation and its Affiliated Organizations for the Blues Band and Solo/Duo Blues Act ready to take their act to the international stage.  The Blues Foundation is Memphis-based, but reaches around the world.  It is the organization dedicated to preserving our blues music history, celebrating recording and performance excellence, supporting blues education and ensuring the future of this uniquely American art form.

North Atlantic Blues Festival July 16 – 17

Area blues fans are heading to Rockland, Maine.  This weekend one of the Northeast’s fun blues festivals, the North Atlantic Blues Festival takes place in Rockland.  While it is belled as an annual two-day blues music festival, it is more tjam that with blues and activities.  It features national blues performers and is considered one of the most prestigious on the East Coast.

The festival is held at the Public Landing in Rockland, Maine, overlooking the picturesque Rockland Harbor.  Some of the top names in blues music have been featured at this East Coast festival.

In addition to all day live entertainment, the festival has vendors selling a wide array of food, drinks and crafts.  The big event is the “club crawl.”  Saturday evening Main Street is closed to traffic for the NABF Club Crawl.  Attendees, wearing their wristband from the festival are allowed admission to the many bars and restaurants featuring many of the top regional blues performers. There are also bands performing on Main Street for all ages at no charge.

Many bands have played on the Crawl for a number of years.  They have a festival following and the clubs are crowded early.  Check the end of the post for a listing of bands.

Also included is a Friday listing as the clubs start the weekend off for early arrivals.

The line-up for Saturday is Nellie Tiger Travis, Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater, Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials, Billy Branch & the Sons of Blues, Magic Slim & the Teardrops and the Brooks Family Blues Dynasty, Lonnie | Ronnie & Wayne.  The first day is a big taste of Chicago.

On Sunday, the opening act is IBC Winner Trampled Under Foot followed by James Armstrong, Toni Lynn Washington, Eric Bibb, and closing with Robert Cray.

Another part of the Festival is the Sunday Blues Brunch.  Both the Time Out Pub (Pat Pepin)  and at the Trade Winds ( Brian and Friends).

Then after the fest concludes Sunday, it really isn’t over.  All Star Jams take place with Brian McClean hosting at the Time Out Pub and Blue Steel Express leading the after fest jam at the Trade Winds “The Keel” (Downstairs).

As an added feature this year it is the 7th Annual Maine Windjammer Parade Friday at the Rockland Harbor.  The Windjammer Assoc will host the Parade past the Rockland Breakwater from 2 to 4 pm.  Geared for spectators on shore and windjammer guests, the event will provide close-up views of the fleet as it sails close to the Breakwater and Lighthouse.  Spectators may view the Parade of Sail from anywhere along the 1 mile Breakwater.  After the Parade, many of the windjammers will anchor next to the jetty for the night.  Festivities include tours of the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse (fmi RBL at 207-542-7574).  For more information, contact Maine Windjammer Assoc. at 1-800-807-9463.

The NABF is one of the reasons that Rockland, Maine was honored with a Mississippi Blues Trail Marker.
