Got a call from Jiri Havelicek of “The 50 Some Bluesmen.” They were playing at a fund-raiser for the New Britain Board of Education to help supply instruments to the elementary and middle schools.
It was going to be held at the West Side Tavern, where I had heard good words on the food. So blues and food, not a bad way to spend an evening. Plus it started at 6 pm.
It was a long room and the band set up in one corner.
The place was filling up fast. Many people took advantage of a nice night to sit on the deck.
Now inside, the bartenders were keeping busy and always with a smile.
The crowd was there to support the music program and knew each other. And a couple of friends from blues events also showed up.
One of the owners welcomed the crowd and reminded everyone that New Britain schools would benefit.
The ticket included an all you can eat buffet. The food looked good and plates filled fast. It looked like the good food reputation was well deserved. A specially decorated cake was available for the sweet taste.
The band introduce the crowd to some blues standards and kept the evening moving. While the crowd socialized, the food kept going and the Committee got the cake ready.
I heard people complimenting the Chef and the buffet was a hit.
It is always good to see a community come together to support the programs that are for the young. Getting musical instruments into the hands of students has a lasting impact.
A good job by West Side Tavern. Good enough for me to get there for a meal.
